IF YOUR DREAMS ARE GREATER THAN YOUR SKILLS
A common “excuse” small business owners have is, “I don’t know how to do that.” That statement usually contains a mixed bag of meanings. It either means, “ I am afraid to do that”, or” I don’t have the knowledge to do it.” In either case it puts up a barrier which will keep them from reaching their vision.
This “bump in the road” has to be overcome in order to move ahead. In the case of fear, such as public speaking or making cold calls, the only solution is to do it. There are no negative consequences from doing things which you fear so make a plan and commit yourself to make a cold call or to say a few words in public. The best time to conquer a fear is today. Procrastination is an early sign of a business that is in the process of deterioration.
The second part may be true. You may not know how to do that. This creates another challenge which will affect your business. If it is something that needs to be done in order to move your business forward, then you have to do it or find someone else to accomplish the task. Not doing something important will also lead to business deterioration.
Change is the only constant in our business world, and all small business owners have to overcome the “I don’t know how” syndrome. On the positive side, there is very little that is not available and demonstrated somewhere on the internet. The solution is to commit yourself to learn something new, today.
Depending upon your circumstances you may have to learn something new and physically implement your new skill. Even if your circumstances allow you to hire someone to do that function, I still encourage you to learn that new skill so you can make sure that the person you hire has the knowledge to complete the task.
The fear factor is something that has to be overcome on an individual basis. If you had the courage to start a new business, anything else pales in comparison to the greatest fear possible, the actual starting of the business.
Most of the “I don’t know how” is centered on the escalating changes in technology. It may seem like an insurmountable challenge, but look at the way our kids have mastered new technologies. They did not know that they should fear it.
You can achieve anything if you believe in yourself.
