BALANCE vs. BURNOUT
The life of a small business owner can be liberating, exhilarating and it requires the exertion of a great amount of energy. Unfortunately it can also be very tiring. The ability to create a balance in your business life not only will avoid burnout but will increase your chances for growing a successful business.
Let’s look at definitions of balance and burnout:
Mayo Clinic defines burn out as “a state of physical, emotional or mental exhaustion, combined with doubts about your competence and the value of your work.” They suggest that burnout not only affects the quality of your work but also your health.
My definition of balance is: “a state in which your work load and life load are in harmony, thus avoiding losing control or failing in either endeavor.”
The following are a few suggestions on how to obtain that sought after harmony:
- Prioritize your daily work activities ( use the Accountability Tracker to help)
- Get organized.
- Do the most difficult things first; stop procrastinating.
- Learn to say “NO”.
- Schedule “down time” from work. Find activities that help you reenergize yourself
- Compliment yourself on the good things you have achieved.
Burnout is sometimes difficult to recognize, where are you today?
“Taking time to live life will only inspire your work.”
