I DON’T KNOW or I DON’T KNOW
Author Seth Godin wrote that there are two kinds of “I don’t know”. The first I don’t know is one that has not been taught to you. As an example, you may have not been taught to play the piano. The second “I don’t know” happens in our small business world. For example, I was told by a small business owner that he is not on Linked because he did not know how to use it.
The second “I don’t know” and the one that pertains to small business owners, is not a lack of ability or brain power; it’s usually either fear or a lack of interest. I believe that each of us has the capacity to overcome most everything we say “I don’t know” to if we are motivated enough to overcome that barrier.
A lack of interest or fear are the reasons for most “I don’t knows”. In many cases an “I don’t know” is due to not wanting to put to full use your mental capacity. It requires you to get out of your comfort zone.
The cost to hire someone to do your “I don’t know’s” is not always affordable. There are several methods to overcome resistance to things we fear. The first is to have a peer or support group to help you through the process and the second is to have an accountability partner that will “push” you to do what you really know you can do, but are afraid or too lazy to do.
Our brains are capable of accomplishing wondrous things, complicated things that we can’t even imagine possible. The secret is to have the internal desire or the necessary motivation to force you into action.
The worst excuse for business failure that I have ever heard is the” I didn’t know.”
