IT’S ALL ABOUT OTHERS
One of the best descriptions I have heard regarding the purpose of free enterprise is as follows: “Free-enterprise capitalism is an extraordinarily powerful system for eliciting, harnessing, and multiplying human ingenuity and industry to create value for others.”
The key words are “to create value for others.” This is the reason we are in business; this is how we benefit our target market and this should be how we build and grow our business. This purpose should go far beyond the self-centered purpose of created value ($) for ourselves; it should not only extend to our target market, but to everything and everyone else.
As soon as a payment is received in our office the first thing my partner, my wife, does is to send a check to our adopted charity. The rest is allocated to paying our operating expenses. Yes, sometimes it is difficult to stretch the funds we receive for our products and services, but if you “help others” it always has a way of coming back to you.
Some small businesses have adopted a “cause” and use it in their marketing. I am sure that you have seen such practices in all areas of business life. There is nothing wrong with this practice; it still helps others less fortunate.
The main reason for having your business “create value for others” is because it is part of your value system. Think about someone who is in need right now and reach out with your time, talent and treasure.
“Successful people are always looking for ways to help others.”
