Managerial Discipline
Whether you are a solopreneur or have employees, focusing on the management of your business is critical to future success. Management in a small business starts with self-management, and that includes not just the business management but also personal life management. The two are so closely intertwined that they must work in close harmony.
Management is made up of two things: focus and time. There is no right way to be a manager; successful management is measured by the achievement of the things that move the business ahead. Management systems are things that have to be learned as a business grows. As a small business owner you have to know your strengths and weaknesses. Focusing on your strengths will help in the development and implementation of your own management style.
One of the definitions of the word manage as defined in Webster’s dictionary is “to succeed in accomplishing”. As a small business owner it is important to understand the components of management responsibility; they include:
- Planning
- Financial
- Marketing
- Operations
Successful management is measured by the only real growth of a business, and this is profit growth.
Managing a small business requires dedication and total concentration on the essentials. That means a constant supervision of the components mentioned above. The company vision (goal) must always be the center of attention, and all the components must work together with the purpose of achieving the vision.
Review the following for your business:
- Do you have an up to date strategic focus plan?
- Do you have the resources to implement the plan?
- Are all your marketing efforts dedicated toward reaching your vision?
- Are the internal support operations working in harmony to deliver your benefits?
Your time, used in an efficient and constructive manner, is your most valuable tool in reaching your goals.
