TALENT & VALUE
As small business owners our job is to always strive to increase the bottom line. As solopreneurs, it is hard to find the necessary time to manage all the aspects required to grow a business, thus, some things are neglected.
Growing the bottom line also includes growing the business itself which requires increasing the number of customers. In talking to hundreds of small business owners the biggest issue that was expressed was a need for more marketing support and “know how.”
Most small business owners are not professional “marketers”. They have a product or service with which they are familiar but getting that information to the target market often remains a mystery. Consequently they spend a lot of time trying to do something in which they don’t have any expertise, wasting valuable time and resources.
It now becomes the old story, what comes first, the chicken or the egg? I am referring to hiring a person to help you in the area where you personally don’t have the expertise. If you find the right talent, part time or full time, the value you add to your business will more than make up the cost.
There are a variety of ways to find the right talent. First, write down exactly what you need that person to do and your expectations if that work is done. Now let’s examine some hiring possibilities:
- Reach out to your data base and ask for a referral for someone that has the talent you need. Specify if it is a full time or part time position. Consider paying minimum wage with a result based bonus.
- Go to a nearby college or university and hire an intern.
- There are several barter companies that will trade your good/services for their expertise.
- Use your social media outlets and post your needs.
Having help to free you up to do what you do best is necessary to maximize your potential and to expedite your growth rate.
