THINK LIKE AN OLYMPIAN
The 2016 summer Olympics started this week in Rio. Hundreds of athletes from around the world are there with one common thought, “I am going to win.” The very same mindset that these Olympic participants have should be foremost in the minds of all business owners. “I am reaching for the Gold.”
A business is like a tree, if it doesn’t grow it dies. Growth in the business world is measured by the bottom line increases. Too many business owners don’t think big and seldom act big. Goals are set as survival goals: “What do I need to make to keep my doors open another month?” Energy is being directed towards survival instead of growth.
One of the components of a vision statement is a “stretch factor”. To accomplish a vision, one has to reach beyond what is easily do-able. Excuses have to disappear and self-imposed limitations and preconceived notions have to be put aside. The first inspirational book I read was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill; the central message was that thinking is the first step to achieving. That thinking has to be directed towards reaching the stretch factor identified in the vision statement.
Olympians are “pushed” by a coach; he helps them maintain and exceed that inner drive that is already in place. Likewise a business owner needs a steady support system to make sure that big thoughts and big actions are not derailed by self-perceived limitations.
Enjoy and learn from the Olympics; always reach for the gold.
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.”
