ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE
My grandson turned 11 a few weeks ago. He has been taking drum lessons, every week, since he was 3 years old. At his recitals and other opportunities where he can showcase his talents he always gets rave reviews, and I am so very proud of his dedication and accomplishment.
His main sport activity is playing basketball. He played this last year on his 5th grade basketball team, and for the past 4 years has been going to a basketball camp in the summer.
He may never play in the NBA nor be a world famous drummer, but, I believe, that he is learning a very important lesson, and that is the importance of having a coach. Not only does he appreciate having someone helping him improve, but it is so noticeable to his family, friends and others who watch him.
Many of us had coaches as children, be it for piano lessons, pop warner, high school sports, etc. we listened and learned and then applied what the coaches told us so that we could improve our “game.”
Teachers also served as coaches as they helped you maneuver through our ABC’s and math.
Many small business owners have forgotten their very valuable coaching experiences they received as children. I believe that nobody achieves excellence without a coach. As small business owners we are playing in the most important game of our lives. We are staking our future, and perhaps that of our family, on our ability to win the Game of Business. Regretfully, many small business owners are opting to learn the game by themselves, without any experience to draw upon.
There are many levels of support! The ones that can help the most are those that challenge you and also provide human interaction. My grandson could never have learned to play the drums by reading a book; he had to have human interaction as part of his coaching.
