Development of a data base management system
There are eight essential components that constitute the foundation that a business needs in order to achieve profitability and sustainability. Knowing the How and Why of a Database is one of them. Because a database is used as a contact system, permission must be asked for before the name is added to any database that you create. Yes, tell everyone that they will be receiving communications from you. Database management is different than a cold e-mail or direct mail campaign.
The following is the BizQuack database management system.
A database is not just a list of contacts. There are two main lists that should be part of a working database. Each list must have the person’s name, contact information (e-mail, home, business, and cellphone number, home or business mailing address), type of work they do and any other important piece of information that you feel is needed. Ideally, birthday and anniversary dates should be obtained whenever possible.
First: A list of the people that know who you are and what you do. I use the example that if I call anyone on this list, they can tell me who you are and what you do. This list can be set up to be further broken down into the following categories and accessed in its entirety or individually in the six categories shown below.
- Past customers
- Friends
- Family members
- Business acquaintances
- Working prospects
- Strategic alliances
Second: This list is made up of people that you have met, asked and received permission to be added to your database for the purpose of future communications. The goal for this second list is to move these people up to the first list.
The development and maintenance of a database is hard work. Once it is “set up,” it will only take a few minutes every day to keep it current.
The method of communication with the two lists and the individual components in the first list will vary with the individual business. The important thing is to reach out to everyone in your database at least once a month. The touch marketing system that BizQuack recommends is two or more touches per month with everyone in your database.
A database is one of the most valuable assets in your “growth” box. This list represents your current customers, new customers, and your referral source as you seek additional business.
