OUT OF CONTROL
“If everything’s under control, you’re going too slow.” Mario Andretti
Small business owners who spend an inordinate amount of time and energy organizing details often forget to focus on achieving specific results needed to reach their vision. Systems are necessary to run a successful business but, there is no such thing as a perfect system.
Spending countless hours getting organized misses the crucial point: the need for thinking and intuitive decision making to get real work done.
By their nature, small businesses are messy, especially in their first few years. Yes, you do need a few foundation pillars to hold up the structure, but then it’s time to let your enthusiasm and creativity take hold and make experimentation a part of your life.
Micromanaging a business to the smallest detail is a sign of being afraid to face the real challenge of reaching outside the comfort zone. That’s where you need to be to grow.
I have spent countless hours working with small business owners in setting up the structure upon which to grow. The big difference is that we always focus on achieving specific results as part of the structure. Someone once said, “Organizing systems are there purely to serve as crude place-holders for targets and their critical parts and pieces.”
The moral of this blog is: do not to let your organizing detract from your desired outcome.
