THE WHY, WHEN, & WHO OF HIRING
Solopreneurs make up a large portion of small business owners. The thought of hiring someone is an overwhelming concept and often avoided. I believe that there are valid reasons to add staff to a one person shop.
The WHY: A new hire often brings a new level of discipline and accountability. It forces a more focused “action” implementation. It provides another set of eyes and ears as well as another view as growth problems are encountered. It often serves as an inspiration to accelerate the growth of a business.
The WHEN: Having a first staff person requires a change in the way the business will operate. Responsibilities and expectations, for both the business owner and new staff person will have to be developed and implemented. The best answer for “the WHEN” is when you are ready to make a different commitment as to the growth rate of your business. It requires having faith in your cash flow projections that will increase because of the additional staff. It will require the business owner to work harder and to devote more time to the development of and the servicing of new customers.
The WHO: The most important attribute that a new hire should have is a value system that matches yours. With that as a base the other strengths that will complement your business should be explored. Salary is always an important consideration and consideration, should be given to the possibility that an employee can provide current value as they learn the new skills you need. Look far and wide for that first hire; don’t be guided solely by experience. Part time help with the hope of achieving a full time position may inspire the employee to put more effort.
The main purpose for owning a business is to make money and to grow the business. Often times, staff is needed to accomplish both of these goals.
