TWO KEY WORDS: Managing & Deals
Networking was a prime source for making small business “deals” (making a sale or obtaining a good referral); unfortunately, many small business owners are sitting on the sideline waiting for the good old days to return. As small business owners you must realize that “deals” are still happening; the methods for making them happen has changed. The need is still there, both for the provider to get his information to a target market as well as the target market’s need to learn what is available to grow their business.
Multiple daily video conferences are the new normal; some may last 15 minutes and others many hours. With over six months of the Covid-19 pandemic we have, as well as our kids, learned how to live within the lock-down parameters that have been given to us.
This is but one of the new ways of doing business that will be coming our way. Many more technological advances will be introduced to help us put our “deals” together.
I believe that a vaccine will be found and a new energy will invigorate our target market to look for the resources, products and services that we offer. The caveat is not to wait until that happens, but to work within these new parameters and improve your communications with your target market.
The second work is managing. I believe that the key to a successful future for a small business owner is the ability to manage a business in times of uncertainty. That means knowing what you can and can’t control. It includes having a clear vision as to where you want to take your company and realizing that the path to reaching your vision has not yet been defined.
The saying; “Anything worthwhile doing is worthwhile doing wrong”, to me, means that we must always be in a state of taking action even though we will certainly make mistakes. You are now guiding your business through a series of mazes with no clear method of reaching the other end.
We cannot predict the future of our economy, new technology, the political unrest, or the effectiveness of a new vaccine, but we can control our belief in the power of our own actions. The future of your business may not be smooth sailing but success will be yours if you can pivot, first your mind set and then your business, as frequently as needed to satisfy the growing needs of your target market. Effective, short term action plans are our marching orders.
