Don’t Say “It Can’t Be Done!”

Every business and every commission sales person starts their endeavor full of enthusiasm. The sky is the limit, success lies just ahead.
To grow a business takes ten times more effort than you ever imagined. The bumps on the road to success seem to get bigger and bigger every day. When things are not going according to plan, be aware that there is a big “devil” on the lookout for you and he goes by the name of “Self-Doubt.”
It’s only Wednesday and I have already heard two small business owners tell me this answer to my question: “It just can’t be done.” I received a litany of reasons for their answers; I had the feeling that they were trying to justify their reason for not accomplishing more. The question I asked was,” Why did you stop working on that project if it was critical to your firm’s success?”
The best advice I can give is, “Don’t ever tell me something can’t be done; tell me how you are going to do it.”
In both cases, I gave my client a pencil and a piece of paper and had them spend an hour creating a list of how that item that was not possible could be accomplished. This process is best implemented when the subject is brought up. If you postpone the “One Hour Solution Process”, you may never get back to it.
This is a very powerful exercise. Next time you give up on something that you feel has no solution, walk away. Find a place with no distractions, forget the stumbling blocks, and write down at least 5 ways that the problem can be overcome.
If you are working with a mentor, spend 30 to 45 minutes alone working on your list and then involve your mentor in a solution brainstorming session. The results will amaze you. Always remember, Nothing is Impossible.
