NO LOOKING BACK
“To drive your business to success, try to view opportunities through the front windshield and not the rear view mirror”. I don’t know where I heard that statement but it certainly is more important now than ever before.
Uncertainty in the world of small business is something that all small business owners have to expect. Looking backwards and lamenting the “what was and what could have been” is the most detrimental thinking for the success and growth of your business.
I don’t believe that all the pressing issues that are bombarding us through every possible media outlet is where our focus should be. It may seem harsh, but I don’t care what you accomplished in the past, what I want to know is what do you plan on accomplishing in the future.
Once you have determined your future, then there is an urgency to reach out for that future. Small business owners must become high speed companies in an increasingly fast and complex world. If your business is not changing faster on the inside than the world is changing on the outside, chances for survival and growth are minimal.
The following 4 pitfalls (mindsets) must be removed in order to go forward:
- We know what’s best for the customer.
- Arrogance
- Ignoring the success that other small businesses are achieving in this same time frame.
- If I can’t do it myself, it can’t be done.
Martin Luther King Jr. said this in much more eloquent words.
If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, keep moving forward!
