TC: BE A LEADER
Leadership is not only about making money, or being liked, or being a leader in your industry. It’s not about having your name in the paper or belonging to the best country club in the area. It’s not about living in the biggest and most expensive home in your community.
Leadership is about having a set of core values that take precedent over everything else in your life.
Values are the enduring, passionate, and distinctive core beliefs that a person has. They are the guiding principles that never change. Values are why you do what you do and what you stand for.
Core values are part of the strategic foundation necessary to grow a respected, sustainable, and profitable business.
In a business workshop session, I asked the participants to create a list of values. In a 5 minute period, with two of us writing down the answers, we came up with a list of 82 “values”. I am sure that we could have easily reached 100. From those suggestions I selected 24 for our challenge today:
Spirituality Patriotism Integrity
Be Authentic Responsibility Compassion
Discipline Accountability Perseverance
Family Community Loyalty
Understanding Patience Gratitude
Humility Purpose Boldness
Friendship Justice Self-respect
Reputation Enthusiasm Optimism
Your challenge is to write a sentence stating what that value means to you, next to each of these words and to share them with your customers, prospects, and friends. Be bold and frame a copy for your office and create a value brochure for your business and then distribute it.
Sharing your values is a sign of a committed and trustworthy leader.
